U.S.News interwiev with Matt Czuchry [New]
Matt Czuchry, super-hot boyfriend of Rory Gilmore on the CW network's Gilmore Girls, tells U.S. News about his experiences at the College of Charleston.
You aren't from South Carolina. How did you pick the College of Charleston?
My family and I used to go to Charleston on vacation. I just fell in love with the city and the people.
You were the captain of the varsity tennis team. Were you also recruited?
Yeah, I was recruited to come play there.
How was Charleston different from high school?
The college experience--it's that first step into life on your own. Not just being away from family and parents, but the whole college environment. It opens you up to people from all around the world, and opportunities and choices about the things you want to pursue. It's that first jump into really making choices for yourself.
One choice you made was to pursue acting--something entirely different from your first plan.
I did. That was late into my junior and senior year in college. I majored in history and political science, but I took some acting classes outside of school [during] my junior and senior year in college.
There weren't acting classes at Charleston?
There was a theater program at the school, but playing on the tennis team was a year-round sport. And with a double major, I couldn't fit any theater curriculum into my program. So I kind of just added another thing on top of it all and took acting classes outside of school. So I would finish [tennis] practice and drive 45 minutes down the road in Charleston, and then come back and go to class. It was a really busy time. But being so active and so busy was really rewarding.
Would you recommend doing athletics in college?
For me, it was fundamental to my entire experience. My friend from Israel visited me last week. We played on the tennis team together and were roommates together. My friends I have for life [as a result of] college are from athletics, and my growth as a person in different ways all stems from athletics.
It's important to have something other than school, whatever it is. If it's any kind of sport or athletic activity, or it's theater, or if it's singing or painting--anything that is separate from the work that you do at school is important to making those choices trying to decide what you want to do and how you want to lead your life.
How about your academic life? Has that helped you at all today, as an actor?
With history and political science, there's a lot of writing papers and analytical work. There is a piece of that that applies to acting, when reading a script and breaking down a script and trying to analyze some of those pieces. It's definitely a piece of what I do now.
Your character Logan is not the hardest worker or the most serious student. Sounds like you were pretty different in college.
Logan and I are completely dissimilar, as far as just the academics aspect. I enjoy the process of learning, so that was why I worked hard in school and did well in school. I think things come a little bit easier for Logan. He's kind of naturally talented. For me, it was something I always had to work hard at, to do well at school.
You can't have been working all the time. Did you have a favorite hangout spot?
One of the things I love about Charleston is the city. There are so many great spots in Charleston. There's a bar called the Griffin, and I spent a lot of time there with my friends.
What do you miss the most about college?
My friend Gill, who came back to visit me from Israel--I don't get to see those friends as much as I would like to. I lived with four other guys, so every day we'd have time together, and now I'm lucky if I see them once a year. The other thing is just the stories--the times playing tennis, and the traveling with tennis, and the stories that we have involved with that.
Logan goes to Yale, so now you've sort of experienced two colleges. In retrospect, where would you rather go?
I look back on my experience in college at Charleston--it was just so right for me. Everything that it had--with the tennis, with the city, and the people and the academics--everything for me was perfect. There was no place I would rather go. What I would say to others that are applying is to look at all those different pieces within yourself and see how they all line up. Find the school that matches up with those pieces that resonate in you.

Matt C. Interview (Source?)
What are some of your most recent project?
Matt: I did a television show last year for CBS called "Hack" and it was with David Morse and Andre Braugher. It was just an amazing experience to work with those two guys who are just legends. They really took me under their wing and showed me what it really means to be an actor in this business. I think what they taught me was if you just come in, show up prepared, you do your work and you make the scene the best scene you can possibly make it. And that's your job! They do it and they do it amazingly and they do it well time after time and it was just an honor and a privilege to work with those two guys. They are like mentors to me. I learned so much from them. That was the major thing that mostly took up my time last year. I was in Philadelphia for most of last year. That pretty much brings us to "Gilmore Girls" now. Logan is 180 degrees different from Rory. It is going to be something different that the audience is going to enjoy. They're going to love it and they're going to hate it. They're not going to decide if they like this guy or do they not like this guy. That's kind of like what he's going to bring out from Rory. It's going to be this new side of her that has been untouched. He's going to challenge her and he's not going to let her get away with anything. He's going to bring a lot to the table. So, that's basically how my character is going to affect Rory.
How did you hear about the role of Logan and what audition like?
Matt: The audition process, you know, the people at the WB, Warner Brothers, the creators of the show "Gilmore Girls" were just amazingly supportive. This is a great show and to be a part of it is a huge responsibility and they were amazingly supportive of me coming onto the show. That's really an honor to have had them so supportive from the network to the studio to the creators of the show. It's just pretty amazing and I'm so thankful to be on the show. My agent and my manager told me that there was going to be a new character coming on to "Gilmore Girls" and immediately I was like, "I love that show! If there is any way that they will see me for that, let me get in on that." Thankfully, they saw me! The audition process itself, I've been watching the show the past four years and I love the show and I think when you love something you are passionate about it. I loved the character and immediately when I read it, I was like, "Oh my God, this guy! There is so much to this character." He's going to change the whole flow of the show. Since I've had the past four years knowing the show and what Rory's character was like and who she was and who her past boyfriends were Tristan, Jess and Dean, I kind of knew where this character was coming in and how he was going to impact the new storyline. That was kind of like the audition process was like. I was able to know how my character was going to affect the storyline and that was really helpful in me getting the job.
You'll be playing Rory's new love interest on "Gilmore Girls." Is it difficult doing kissing scenes in front of a camera?
Matt: You know that Alexis is so laid back. She's so great to work with! I'm listening to a CD right now that she made me that is a mix CD of this incredible music. She made it for me for no reason and that just tells you what kind of person she is. She's completely laid back so it's not going to be a problem. She's done it before. I've done it before and she's amazingly cool so it will be fine.
What's it like working with a cast so diverse in age?
Matt: This is the fifth season of the show so everybody is in the groove. I'm coming in as the new guy, but everybody is in the groove. They know who their characters are and they know what the show is and they just come in and nail it every day. It's a privilege to be on a show that is in its fifth season.
Since you'll be Rory's new boyfriend, did you have to spend time off the set to get to know each other ahead of time?
Matt: We met once before. We had lunch this one-day before the first day of shooting our first scene together. We just talked and got comfortable with each other and that helped. Like I said, Alexis is so laid back that it was just easy to get along with her. We had one lunch together before we started shooting.
How did you get into acting?
Matt: It's amazing how things that are so right for you come back. It's like a revolving door. I majored in History and Political Science at the College of Charleston . I took one theater course and the theater professor, at the end, for my final paper wrote on the back, "I know you are majoring in History and Political Science, but I think you should change your major to Theater." She wrote me that and pulled me aside afterwards and said she thought I should major in theater. I was like, "Really? Wow! I'd love to be an actor! I've always loved to tell stories. I love characters, I love going to movies and I love watching TV. But I can't do that! Come on! I'm from Johnson City , Tennessee !" My family was really supportive and said, "This is who you are, since you were a kid, you loved to tell stories, you loved to become characters, you loved to watch TV and you get into the characters after you watch them." They said, "You need to this!" I got in to it through, really because of my family believing in me and it's something I really actually wanted to do since I was a kid and I'd do all that kind of stuff. I wrote my brother, Mike, an email last night and I was telling him all of these things telling him that he is such a hero to me and a mentor to me. My brother, Mike, is really a hero to me and it has to do because he would allow my imagination to take over. We'd create these characters and we'd tell each other stories. I was so fortunate to grow up in a family that valued using your imagination and I just never let go of that. I've always loved using my imagination and I thought, "Man, if I can do that for the rest of my life than let's do it!"
What was your transition like from South Carolina to Los Angeles ?
Matt: I love actors because I love watching TV and I love going to movies so I love actors and I also love actors because I know what they go through. I came out here by myself and I knew no one and had just graduated college. I had to deal with all of that. I came out here by myself so not only was a learning about this new business, I had no friends. I remember when I drove out with my dad and I remember driving and I saw the sign that said, "632 miles to Los Angeles " and I was listening to Dave Matthews with my dad and I just busted out crying. It was the first time I cried! When I graduated college and I was thinking about moving out to LA and all of these great things are happening to me, I was like, "Oh yeah! You gotta' do it! I'm gunna do it! I'm gunna do it!" I'm backing up and driving out, it's the second day and I see this sign that says "632 miles to Los Angeles" and that is when it hit me that, oh my God, I'm going to do this and that's when it hit me, Oh my God I'm doing this and I just started bawling my eyes out. I'm driving and my dad is in the passenger seat and he holds me and is like, "Let's stop." I said, "No, I can't stop because if we stop, I'll go back and I won't do this. We just have to keep driving." We kept driving and I probably bawled my eyes out for ten minutes. There was plenty of crying and lots of bouts of "am I doing the right thing" for a very long time.
You were on the show "Young Americans." What made you want to be a part of this project?
Matt: Young Americans was one of my early jobs. I had been in LA for about 8 months when I got that job. There was a casting director, Jason Wood and the creator of the show, Steven Antin. When you first come out to LA, it takes some people believing in you. You need some champions to get the ball rolling. Jason Wood and Steven Antin championed me. They saw something that they wanted to put in the project and that's how that one happened for me. I was fresh off the boat and it really takes somebody to say, "We see something in this guy. We want him to be on our show!" I'm completely grateful for that. Every job is different and for that one, that really was the creator of the show saying, "This guy is new, but I see something in him and let's give him a shot!" I mark most of my life on that point. When I saw that sign I knew I was going to be a different person afterwards and I had no idea who that person was or what I was going to do or how this thing was going to shake out. It was really really hard. Again, thank God I had my family there pushing me and supporting me.
What has been your favorite project to work on so far?
Matt: Each project is just so different. They are so special for their own reasons. It is just like the people you meet, the things that I learn. Each project is just special in it's own right. Right now, I'm enjoying so much of Gilmore Girls because I'm meeting so many new people. Alexis is so cool and laid back. These two guys that play my friends on the show, we're going to go out Saturday night. It's exciting because I have some new people in my life. Each job is just special for it's own reasons.
What show would you love to have a role on?
Matt: I'd love to be an animated character on " South Park ." I want to be a voice on " South Park ." That show is genius! I love that sensibility. I also love "Six Feet Under." Those are two shows that I really love the story and the characters. Those are two shows that I love and I'd love to be on them.
What was your experience like on the set of 8 Legged Freaks, working with David Arquette?
Matt: He is just such a gracious and kind person. He bought ribs for everybody this one time. He was just so gracious and such a kind man. I can't say enough good things as far as how kind he was to everyone on the crew and to his fellow actors. It was just a pleasure. He's the kind of guy that you would love to go out with for a beer because he's just a great guy, personally.
You've done a lot of work for the WB. What is so appealing about working for this network?
Matt: It really just depends on the project. It is just so happens that this pilot that I did this past "Dark Shadows," which is a vampire project and so I got to have this whole prosthetic on the side of my neck like I got bitten by a vampire. Growing up I used to always play with special effect makeup and I love vampires and fantasies so I was like sign me up for that! It just depends on the project and it just so happens that's what has connected with me so far.
You studied acting with Belita Moreno of "The George Lopez Show." What have you learned from your studies?
Matt: You learn about yourself from these classes, who you are and who to tap into that. You learn technical aspects of the business, as well, but the main thing else I will say is that you learn about yourself and you learn how to tap into that. We're creating characters, that's what I love and, again, with imagination I've done it all my life. I'm so fortunate to have a job where that's what I do. I create characters and I tell stories. In class, I just learn about myself and how to tap into that and how to play all these other characters. So, class is fun for me because I'm studying how to do something I love. It's a great thing.
What do you do in your spare time?
Matt: I haven't had much spare time lately. This show has been keeping me really busy, which is perfect. I'm doing something that I love. I've been getting up at 4 in the morning and staying until 9 o' clock at night and staying there until 6am in the morning on Saturday. I'm like, "Let's do it again! Let's do it tomorrow!" I don't care if I don't have any free time because this is what I love. My free time has been spent with this.
What music is currently in your CD player?
Matt: I've always got Radiohead in there somewhere. It's my favorite band! The Roots new CD is pretty amazing and I'm a big fan of hip-hop. There is always going to be some hip-hop in there. Some Radiohead and hip-hop and I'm good to go!
You were captain of the tennis team in college. Why didn't you pursue a career in tennis?
Matt: Professionally, I wasn't good enough. I've played athletics all of my life. I've played tennis and that's how I went to school. That's how I went to college. I learned some amazing things that I still apply to my daily life and that I apply to acting, whether it be discipline, leadership, how to win, how to lose and what all of those things mean in life in general. It was a great teaching tool for me. I didn't pursue because I basically did everything I wanted to do with tennis. I won the state championship my senior year in high school, which was an amazing achievement for me and something I wanted to do. I played tennis in college, varsity all six years. I was fortunate enough to be captain of my team. I really didn't want to do it anymore because I wanted to pursue acting.
What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?
Matt: I hope they enjoy this new character coming on. This is going to be a guy that you're going to love him and you're going to hate him. He's completely different than anything Rory has ever seen. I just hope they can tap into this world. Whether they like him, or they want him together, I just want the audience to feel something. I just want the audience to feel something. If they love Dean, gotta' have Dean, because Logan is such a jerk, that's great because then I have done my job. Or, if they're like, "No, I want Logan to be with Rory because he's different," then I've done my job. As long as I am making the audience feel something or think about something than I'm doing my job. I hope that I can pull that off with this show.

| Interview n°3 •MyFanBase Interview with Matt Czuchry Interview with Matt Czuchry
We got the opportunity to do an interview with Matt Czuchry, the star from "Gilmore Girls". He talked about the show, his hopes for the upcoming season, his relationship with Alexis and answered questions from his fans...
We decided to publish the interview in English too, because we know that Matt has many fans from around the world and some of the fan questions were from them. So, we hope you enjoy it! :-)
1. You came to Gilmore Girls in the show's fifth year. Do you remember what your first day on set was like? And isn't it kind of like being the new kid in school when you start a new job where the whole crew worked together for years?
My first day on the set, my first interaction with the cast, my first scenes of GILMORE GIRLS, went kind of like this: Imagine you just moved to a new town. You know no one. You are unsure of yourself and nervous to find new friends. On your first day of high school in this new town, lunchtime comes. You know you have to eat, but you donu2019t know if you can pull off the small tasks of picking out the cool chips or fun drinks. But, you have to eat, and you also know that you better pick out that slice of pizza with confidence because all eyes are testing you. So you walk into the cafeteria, pretend like it is no big deal on the outside, as you begin to crumble on the inside. You make a couple of choices on what to eat, and then as you walk to your empty seat, a group who has been friends forever wave in your direction. They invite you over. You sit at their table. They welcome you in. And in that moment you have friends for life. You have a moment where you will be forever grateful for their kindness. You pass the first test. You settle into your chair, take your first bite, and find yourself looking around at all that is still left unknown. Grateful a few kind people took the time to let you into their group.
2. This is maybe the hundredth time you got this question, but what are your thoughts about Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino leaving the show and David Rosenthal taking over? And when did you receive the news?
Amy told me that she and Dan were not returning to the show during filming of the final episode this past season. Even though they will not be on set this upcoming season, their characters, their voice, their town, their vision, remain. They created the show. They are the foundation of our success. That foundation remains. Once that foundation is built, it remains always until the show is no longer on the air.
3. It is always reported that at the end of each season, the crew is watching all the bloopers from the year. Tell us: Who screws up the most?
I have never seen a blooper reel from Gilmore Girls and I can't really say who screws up the most because my mind does not work that way. If you think that you or the other actor is screwing up, then your missing opportunities for honest moments in a scene. It is a process to find a scene. That process has many different elements to it. If you are staying true to the scene, then stuff just happens. You don't put a value on things. When you find yourself really letting go, then sometimes the "mistakes" are the most honest and interesting aspects of the scene.
4. Have you heard anything about what the writers plan for your character next season? Do you think Logan is really going to be in London and what will this mean to his relationship with Rory in your opinion?
We usually don't hear about storylines until very close to the filming of that particular episode. I have yet to hear about the direction for Logan's storylines in the upcoming season. My hope is that the audience will get to see Logan take on his adult responsibilities and thrive in the business world. Personally, I would love to see Logan apply his spontaneous nature and love of life to the challenges he finds with the paper and his fast approaching adult life he has resisted to this point. As for Rory and Logan together, distance makes the heart grow fonder. With that, I could see Rory and Logan becoming more mature in their support for each other. A deeper friendship could develop as Rory grows closer to the end of her stay at Yale. A friendship that would survive even if the relationship becomes too difficult.
5. How would you feel about this being the possible last season of Gilmore Girls. Do you feel that after seven years it is time to end the show or do you think the writers could come up with interesting stories, maybe even beyond year 7? And the most important question: Would you be interested in playing Logan for more than one year? One of my favorite shows was SIX FEET UNDER. As an audience member, I really appreciated knowing at the beginning of the season that it was the last for the show. In addition, the final episode was beautiful in the way they brought the show and its characters to completion. In summary, the last season of the show fulfilled my time as an audience member. I wish the same for the fans of GILMORE GIRLS. The fans of GILMORE GIRLS deserve to know when the end is here so that they can have closure with these characters that they have lived with for so long. Whenever the last season is for GILMORE GIRLS, I hope the writers and producers know in the appropriate time so as to give the fans time to gain closure with the show that they love. Cross your fingers that indeed this does happen because although this situation is desirable, it is often not achieved due to the constraints of television. As with the decisions of how long Logan will be around, that question can't be answered until other elements of the show are answered. I love this character and the opportunity to be on a show that I respect and enjoy. That much I can say today.
6. How much of Logan Huntzberger is in Matt Czuchry? Are you anything like Logan in real life?
Playing Logan has enriched my personal life. As I have discovered the thoughts that make Logan tick, I have tried to embrace the good found in him and resist the bad.
7. What are you doing this summer? And do you have any plans for future projects you can share?
This summer I have enjoyed my time off through travel, friends, and family. Since GILMORE GIRLS begins filming shortly, the new season is my main focus career wise currently.
8. Since Germany is currently hosting the soccer world cup, are you interested in soccer? And have you ever been to Germany or Europe?
World Cup is my favorite sporting event. Every four years during this time my life becomes all about soccer. Wake up early. Get the T.V. ready. Call my brother and chat about the line-ups. Watch the game. Then after the game, call my brother back and chat about the moments we enjoyed. I am always quite depressed when each World Cup ends. Each year I try to find a way to attend the event in person, that has not happened yet, but it will. My sister was married in Germany so I have a very special bond with the country. I have been to Europe several times and each time I go, I don't want to come home. Europe is an incredible place filled with people who celebrate their lives. Each time I come back from my travels to Europe, my appreciation for life grows.
9. From Karen: Did you receive the birthdaybook that was send to you for your birthday? Your thoughts about it? And how do you feel about your popularity? Are you sometimes visiting websites about you or the show that fans have created?
Indeed I did receive my birthday book. I thank each and every fan that was a part of that work. I thank you so very much! I remember exactly when the book was handed to me. I was in my car ready to leave set and I sat briefly in my car to contemplate briefly the bad day I had just been through. A tap came on my window. I opened the door and the birthday book was handed to me. I sat in my car and read every page. Instantly my day went from bad to great. What was so beautiful about the book was it was a collection of individuals from around the world who met through their love of the character I play on TV. I felt as though I was the glue for new friendships. I felt special because connections of goodness had been made through my time on the show. Television provides that release for people. A way to add enjoyment to their lives. I felt appreciated because my efforts had made others happy. Thank you for giving me that. The book was an instance where the popularity of the show, and my impact on the show, blew me away as to the places and individuals that can be reached. That popularity can be both overwhelming and beautiful all at once. As far as visiting websites are concerned, I know what is out there one way or another.
10. From Constance: You once said in an interview that you had auditioned for several characters on Gilmore Girls. Which ones? (Don't tell us it'xss Kirk! ;-))
Ha! That is beautiful. No Constance it was not for Kirk. I auditioned for the roles that eventually became Jess, Tristan, and Marty.
11. From Nina: Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
Where I see myself in 20 years is such a difficult question because this business and this craft forces you to focus on the immediate future. That being said, I certainly have goals and desires that I hope to attain 20 years from now and I work towards those future wants every day. Some of my future hopes are: I would like to direct, write a screenplay, continue acting in T.V. and film, and have a dog by my side who is my best friend.
12. From Julie: Besides your age and sex, since you said you were a fan of Gilmore Girls even before you got the role of Logan, is there any role on the show you would like to play, if you weren't playing him?
Kirk!
13. From Sawan: The goodbye scene in Partings was so emotional. How did you and Alexis prepare for it?
With emotional scenes such as the one in "Partings," I find myself off in a corner by myself, closing my eyes, very quite, not talking to anyone, and listening to music that puts me in the appropriate emotional state for the scene.
14. From Karen: What would you do if you were Logan? Pull a Lorelai Gilmore and break away from the family or will you do what is expected from you? Be an heir to your family's fortune and go into the newspaper business?
If I were Logan I would take control of my future on my terms. I would go into the newspaper business but I would... sleep in and show up to work at 10am. I would never stay past 5pm. I would take two-hour lunch breaks. I would never work on weekends. And, at least every two weeks I would have to see my girlfriend Rory no matter what distance separated us.
15. From Ellie: You and Alexis Bledel have such great chemistry on screen, are you guys good friends off-set too?
Alexis is a dear friend of mine. We trust and respect each in all aspects of our lives. I look forward to days when I get a chance to see her.
