2ème interview

Scott Patterson

Traduction à venir d'Ygrain

An October 2004 Interview
with Tony Bray

His role on "Gilmore Girls" was only supposed to be temporary, but fans and show producers decided that the actor was the perfect person to keep the "Girls" focused on the real world.

When The WB introduced "Gilmore Girls" in 2000 on October 5, most television critics predicted immediate success for the series because of the fine writing and the two superb actresses who shine as single mother Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and her teen daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel). The critics also thought that the show was a natural fit for female viewers but gave it little chance of scoring with the male crowd.

That was their mistake. Scott Patterson proved them wrong. His portrayal of Luke Danes, the head-strong owner of a local diner, scored with men because of his independent style and rugged appearance that made him seem like the perfect friend to share a brew with after a tiring day at work. The ladies in the audience noticed too. So did the series producers who did not originally plan for the talented actor to be in many episodes. That was then, this is now, and Luke and Lorelai are headed for a romantic season number five. Fans of the show will be pleased. They knew that the happy couple would share love one day.

I had a chance to talk with Scott last week about his work on the series and his desire to better the lives of children all over America. On January 22 (2005), he and two-time Olympic medalist Picabo Street will host a celebrity ski challenge at the Park City Mountain Resort in Park City, Utah. All proceeds from the event will benefit National Children's Alliance and the Children's Advocacy Center Programs. The main reason Scott likes being on a hit series is that he gets to use his celebrity status as a way to help kids who need assistance the most. That's why he definitely deserves his time in the spotlight.

"Gilmore Girls" fans will be able to find their favorite show on more than one network this year. ABC Family will start broadcasting the first season on Monday, October 4, in the 5:00 PM time period on weekdays. Scott and the rest of the cast will also be featured during a "Backstage Special" that will debut on ABC Family Sunday, October 3 at 8:00 PM. Men who think that the show is nothing more than a series of mini chick flicks should tune in to find out why they are so wrong.

The Scott Patterson Interview

What was your experience with The Actors Studio?

I am not a member. I auditioned twice. Didn't get in, but they did ask me to become an observer, which is the next step to becoming a member. What that afforded me was the chance to sit in on the twice weekly sessions. They had an acting session -- I believe it was on a Monday or a Tuesday -- and then on a Thursday there was the director's unit that was usually moderated by Arthur Penn. I found it equally, if not more fascinating, than the acting unit.

I was also allowed to audition for and actually became involved with several productions that the Actors Studio was putting on. They have a real professional theater there. I just got very lucky. I don't know why they allowed me to do it, but I certainly wasn't going to question their decision.

The fact that you even got in their front door speaks a lot for your talent level.

I started late in life. I was more interested in writing. I had actually written a play in high school. I was more interested in directing and writing during those years than I was in acting. I was too shy, too withdrawn to ever consider getting out in front of people and acting scenes out. I did eventually get into an acting class and found it to be quite interesting. I gave it six months and thought if I had the talent for it I would stick with it. I found out that indeed I was actually falling in love with it and couldn't consider doing anything else.

You're terrific as Luke in "Gilmore Girls."

Thank you very much. I feel very privileged to be able to play that role. Amy Sherman came into my life and completely transformed it with this character. All kudos to her.

You're the reason I watch the show because your character would be fun to hang out with at a ball game or pool hall.

I've been getting that the last couple of years. Guys have been coming up to me and saying, "you know, it's really not my kind of show. My wife and my daughter got me into watching it. Initially, I was sort of reluctant, but now the only reason I watch it is because of Luke. He's the only character on television that doesn't take crap from anybody."

You don't take it and you don't seem to really care about what they think about the way you dress.

He's definitely the king of his castle, if you want to call it a castle. He's the king of his hut.

Do you think Luke's upcoming romance with Lorelai will force Luke to change.

I really look at it as an opportunity to show a different side of the character and that is always refreshing. I've been playing him for four years now. This is the fifth year and now there are some situations where it would be inappropriate to be so rough. Luke has to display some compassion. He has to display more patience. The challenge is to not lose the thread of the character, which is a little bit of a balancing act, but it's not too tough. I think I can pull it off.

When Luke and Lorelai met in season one, it was easy to sense the chemistry between the two characters.

The pilot script began with Luke's diner and ended with Luke's diner. I was not originally a series regular. They hired me just to be in the pilot. I think they were just wondering how the chemistry would be between Laura and I. They came back for more episodes. Then it sort of grew into this regular series thing very quickly. I don't know if a lot of people know that, but I was not originally a series regular.

Do you get to write much anymore?

No. I don't really do any writing anymore, I don't have time. I'm trying to get some things off the ground as a producer. I'm also working on a charity ski event in Park City in January with Picabo Street. It's The National Children's Alliance. It's for sexually abused children. I also work with the Make a Wish Foundation. I did a fund raiser for Cystic Fibrosis in Colorado last year. We did great with that. I really enjoy the charity work. I'm always eager to try to help out because I think it's the best use of celebrity.

Can you tell me more about the ski event.

It will take place on January 22nd and January 23rd in Park City, Utah. We are currently seeking corporate sponsorship. Right now we're negotiating with ESPN to televise it. We're trying to get as many celebrities on board as we can. The WB is going to help us out. We'll just see what happens. We'll either have a big deal event or we'll have a smaller event that raises a little bit of money. Either way, it's all good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm also trying to raise money for the new Children's Hospital at Johns Hopkins University. My brother-in-law is head of pediatrics there. He's trying to raise $100 million to build a new Children's Hospital. He has about $65 million.

I'm beginning to see the point in being a celebrity, however small a celebrity I am.

I appreciate the great work you're doing for children. They need it.

They sure do. Well, you hang in there man.

Thanks, you too.

All my best to you and yours and take care, Tony.

Scott Patterson: then and now
By Arieanna | Related entries in Luke, Interviews, The Cast

Scott Patterson, the lovable but surly Luke Danes of Gilmore Girls. With a rags to riches story that will inspire you to love him even more.

Here is a brief glance into the life of Scott Patterson, provided by the New York Daily News.

Scott has a $90k Mercedes, a $60 BMW and lives in a $1.27 million home in Hollywood Hills, close neighbours to Lucy Liu and George Clooney. Gilmore Girls has been good for him.

But here is what you didn’t know. Less than 10 years ago, Scott Patterson was broke. Scott used to play ball, but after dropping basebal, the actor was destitute and ended up living in his $400 1966 Pontiac Tempest.

Was Scott getting work as an actor? Yes, some. Commercials, small TV roles (even on Seinfeld), small film roles - not making more than $33k for the year.

So, at the age of 47, what does Luke now have to say about his life then and now? This about sums it up…

[Scott Patterson] is determined never to be hungry again.

Here is Scott’s plan to keep the money he is finally now earning when it will, eventually, stop coming in from the Gilmore Girls:

Along with Jeffrey Fishman, a Los Angeles-based financial planner with a big Hollywood clientele, Patterson has scripted a financial plan that will let him sleep at night even after the studios stop calling…

"Actors suddenly come into money and there is a temptation to spend. Then suddenly the show is off the air and frequently people aren’t prepared," Fishman said. "We want to capitalize on his years of highest earnings to ensure his long term financial security."

So, Scott has devised a plan that will give him the enjoyment now, while his show is still popular and filming, but which will give him peace for the rest of his days. This "save when you earn most" is something most people, whether they earn a little or a lot, learn far too late. I’ve already started saving heavily for my retirement, even before buying a house. Why? For the same reasons. I won’t always make what I do now, especially when I’m old. Now, back to Scott:

But Patterson is no typical celeb who hands off his money to a financial planner and heads for the studio set.

He reads Barron’s and The Wall Street Journal and considers fabled Berkshire Hathaway sage Warren Buffett a hero. If his acting career stalled, he would pursue a degree in economics and finance, he said.

In May, when Patterson came to New York for the network "upfronts," to join his "Gilmore" co-stars in a glitzy presentation for advertisers, he made time for a visit with a "top derivatives" guy on Wall Street.

"Money fascinates me," Patterson said. When asked why, he noted his less-than-privileged childhood in Haddonfield, N.J., an affluent suburb in South Jersey. His father left his family when he was 15. His stepfather was a contractor.

"Growing up in that town, you saw the wealth you didn’t have," Patterson said. "If I wanted a bike, I had to buy it."

By the time he met Fishman around 2001, Patterson already had his big break in "Gilmore" and was suddenly seeing sizable checks flowing in. He declined to reveal his salary. Actors on a series will typically start out earning $25,000 per episode - a full season is 26 episodes - but those numbers go up as a show gets renewed.

But even with money coming in, Patterson needed help. Flush with cash, he was taking big risks. During the dot-com bust, he lost $25,000 in one day on tech stock eToys…

Patterson lost $5,000 in one night gambling in the Bahamas. Family members and friends were coming out of the woodwork asking for money. Everyone from real estate brokers to Steinway piano salesmen had something to sell him.

He was about to buy a home in Malibu he couldn’t afford when Fishman brought him down to earth.

To start, the financial planner urged Patterson to create an emergency fund with about 12 months worth of living expenses. Then they set up a defined benefits pension plan. "We put in the maximum allowable by the IRS," Fishman said. "Very often actors do not have this."

A low-risk investment portfolio, a mix of stocks, bonds and mutual funds came next…

Could he still live the good life if "Gilmore Girls" expired? "I’m just about there," he said…

Scott, I don’t do you enough justice here on the blog a lot of the time. You’re really a quiet guy, a smart guy planning wisely for the future, and it’s easy to overlook you. But, we love you and what you do for our Gilmore Girls! We wish you luck in whatever may come after!

14eme interview

Gilmore Girls in the hot seat on the TCA tour
By Arieanna | Related entries in Gilmore Girls, Gilmore News, Interviews, Pictures

Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham both attended the Television Critics Association (TCA) Press Tour panel on July 17th. This is a place where 200 TV critics come to greet and gossip with producers and cast of primetime shows. Panels are staged with executives of networks and then with specific show actors and creators, like Gilmore Girls.

You can see Alexis has had some good sun this summer… she’s much more freckled, even though still fair skinned. She looks good though - I Lov1 the white dress with chunky brown belt. Laruen Graham looks so pretty! Far more tanned than Alexis, to be sure.

Now, onto the juicy stuff. The Gilmore Girls on the panel - in the spotlight. New network. New producer. New writers. Maybe the last season… it’s all a crazy time for the Gilmore Girls. Let’s see what they have to say.

"Your legal contracts are up and you begin to imagine what-if," Graham told the Television Critics Association’s summer meeting. "I don’t want to be in a situation where I feel sorry for me. I’ve seen that happen to actors and shows where the thing is done, let it be over. I don’t know that we’re in that situation."

Bledel added, "I really don’t know what this year is going to be like. I’m going to see what it’s like, then decide how I feel. We’ll see."

Graham wasn’t enthralled with last season’s story line that had her Lorelai character giving fiance Luke a now-or-never ultimatum after he asked for patience in dealing with his newly discovered 12-year-old daughter. Luke let Lorelai walk out of his life.

"It wasn’t my favorite stuff to play, to be dictated to by Luke, but again, it was a believable conflict and a believable obstacle between them and that’s why the end made perfect sense," Graham said. "If everything had gone the way the fans had wanted it to go, the show would have been over."

And Graham "wasn’t a fan" of the painful separation between Lorelai and her screen daughter, Rory…

"I loved that writing [Amy Sherman-Palladino & Daniel Palladino], but I also think there’s room for it to grow," she said…

Dave Rosenthal, a writer and producer on the show, is in charge now, and he oversees an eight-person writing staff. He said he’s not treating this season like it will be the show’s last.

"The goal is to do 22 good episodes of `Gilmore Girls’ and let the rest take its course," he said.

Sherman-Palladino has said she knows how the show should end. When the time comes, Rosenthal said he’ll call her.

"I would definitely like to talk to Amy about that," he said.

It’s not a huge interview and doesn’t tell us much new stuff. Apparently, Lauren Graham was a bit snappy (comments not in the interview above) when it came to off-topic questions being asked, and was civil but sharp about not receiving an Emmy.

However, it’s a good sign of hope that maybe, just maybe, this is not the last season!!

KV: So, lay it on me. What is your gut feeling on how much longer the show will go?

SP: Gosh, I don’t know. We have new showrunners, so I think it really depends on … Wait, I’m sorry, my phone is ringing.

KV: Your bitches be calling you up?

SP: (laughs) Yeah! There’s just so many of them. I can’t keep track. Here, I need to put this on vibrate. … Anyway, I don’t know how long the show will go. It really is up to the three of us. Or actually, I guess, it’s up to the two of them.

KV: You’re all under contract through the end of this season, right?

SP: Yes. And as long as there’s fresh storylines and compelling storytelling, I don’t see why anybody would want to jump off this show. This is a great show and you just, you don’t get off a hit. You don’t do it. It’s too rare. Lightning doesn’t strike twice. And plus, we’re on a new network and they really want it to go. So I think we kind of owe it to them to at least give it our best effort and stick around as long as we can.

KV: Here’s what I want to know. What are you personal thoughts as far as Luke and Lorelai? Do you want them to be together or do—

SP: No. I don’t. I really don’t. I really think that the tension, and I know the fans are getting a little impatient. I’ve been getting some letters and I get comments in the supermarket and you know, I think you have to careful about that kind of thing. But I think you have to be very, very careful about getting Lorelai -- Luke and Lorelai together. I think it’s better if there is a distance. I think it’s better if it’s an *almost kind of a situation. I love the fact that Christopher is back. I think it’s going to create a lot of tension, and that’s why people watch this show. And whether they realize it or not, once people get together, no matter how artfully it’s done, it’s hard to keep that tension going.

KV: Would you prefer Lorelai be with Christopher?

SP: Um …. I don’t know about that. I mean … I just really like tension. That’s what makes it … you know.

KV: You like to be the grunty, grumpy guy with the backwards baseball cap.

SP: It’s much more interesting for us as actors to play those kinds of scenes. It’s more fun. There are more colors that can come out of it. And look, whatever they do, whatever they decide, I’m sure it will be compelling and interesting, and something that no one’s ever thought of before. And they’re together but, wow, there’s even more tension. So we’ll see. We’ll see.
